Will the treatment be painful?
We will take every measure to ensure that your procedure is in no way uncomfortable or painful. If treatment is needed, we will inject a small amount of anesthesia to gently numb a concentrated area of your mouth. For most patients, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours.
What should I expect on the day of my appointment?
1. The Initial Consultation (30 Minutes)
Before the procedure, Dr. Johnson will perform an exam to confirm that a root canal is the best solution. This usually includes:
- A discussion about your symptoms, such as tooth pain, swelling, or temperature sensitivity.
- X-rays and a Cone Beam CT scan to assess the extent of infection, determine the number of canals in the tooth, and check for abscess formation.
-
- Clinical testing of the referred tooth and surrounding teeth to confirm where the symptoms are coming from.
-
- A review of your medical and dental history to ensure safe treatment.
2. Preparing for the Procedure (10-15 Minutes)
On the day of your root canal, Dr. Johnson will numb the affected area with local anesthesia to ensure a painless experience. A rubber dam is placed over the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva, preventing contamination.
3. Removing the Infection (30-60 Minutes)
The actual root canal treatment begins with the Dr. Johnson creating a small opening in the tooth to access the infected pulp. Specialized tools are used to:
- Remove infected or damaged pulp tissue inside the tooth.
- Clean and disinfect the canals thoroughly.
- Shape the canals to prepare for filling.
The length of this step depends on the complexity of the tooth’s roots. Molars, which have more canals, take longer than front teeth.
4. Filling and Sealing the Tooth (15 Minutes)
Once the infection is removed, Dr. Johnson fills the canals with Gutta Percha. A temporary filling is placed to close the access hole. This step is crucial in protecting the treated tooth. Your next step will be to return to your General Dentist within 30 - 45 days for the permanent restoration.
How long will my appointment be?
You should expect to be in our office for an hour for a consultation appointment and at least 2 hours for an appointment that includes root canal treatment.
